Let there be Light!

Light and lighting are Extra Sensory elements that can create mood and enhance the experience of your events, surprising and delighting your guests. They can be purely functional or transform your event into an ethereal experience!

An example of functional lighting is how it impacts events in the evening and the importance of properly lighting outdoor areas at night. This is especially relevant in the fall when the weather is still warm, and we often feel like it's still summer with those long daylight hours. In September, sunset is around 7 p.m., but by October, it’s around 6 p.m. before we adjust the clocks. Therefore, it’s crucial to consider outdoor lighting for fall events. Pay special attention to walkways and areas where food and beverages will be served. Avoid using flood security lights, as they are more suited for grilling or spotting wildlife and pets. Guests generally do not appreciate having spotlights in their eyes! Instead, consider warm, inviting bistro lights on shepherd hooks or along fences and between trees. Fairy lights suspended overhead can create a canopy of light, resembling your own galaxy of stars twinkling above. These lights provide a functional, attractive, and transformative ambience. Additionally, uplighting your trees and landscape can add a touch of enchantment, creating the experience you desire. You want to transform and enhance your yard and home.

Lighting in Tents during the daytime is another example of when we need to be mindful of lighting. We may think that it is daytime, and you don’t need lights, but most tents have that opaque white top that does not let sunlight in, and instead provides shade. If you have a cloudy day or have your tent in a shady area, you will definitely need lighting to illuminate your space. My favorite is when the top of the tent is illuminated or washed in color or projects a pattern. That type of lighting is transformative and certainly goes beyond functional. It is enhancing and can repeat a theme or color; be a part of the décor. It is truly amazing the ways light is a part of the Extra sensory aspect of events today.

Cordless USB operated lamps, acolyte battery votives and pillar candles are an affordable and practical way to enjoy ambient lighting, even when you’re not entertaining. Some are even submersible! These options enhance your everyday enjoyment of indoor and outdoor spaces without the risk of flames or the annoyance of summer breezes blowing them out. Cordless USB-operated lamps are increasingly seen on tabletops in restaurants, replacing traditional candles and fuel lamps. Although they represent a larger initial investment, they are non-consumable—there are no batteries to replace, only USB recharging! They come in chic, endless styles, and their brightness can be adjusted by touch, allowing you or your guests to set the perfect level of illumination based on preference or need.
